Where do ARCC students come from?
ARCC prides itself in attracting a well-balanced mix of students. In years past, we have had students from 40 states and 10 foreign countries, as well as from all over the U.S.
How do you assure that students of similar ages are in a group together?
We believe strongly that students in similar grades should be grouped together. To allow this, each ARCC trip date has several groups departing at the same time. Last year we had many trips divided into a 7th and 8th grade group, a 9th and 10th grade group, and an 11th and 12th grade group. Each group did identical activities, but in a slightly different order and generally did not see any other group members.
What is the male/female ratio?
Our ideal ratio on each trip is 50/50. Often there may be one or two more females than males or vice versa, but generally the ratio is close to even and not a concern. Once we reach our cap of either males of females on a given trip, we than close off that group to applicants of that gender in order to assure the desired balance.
Can friends come on the same trip?
You may come on an ARCC trip with a friend, although we strongly encourage students to come alone. A major component of ARCC trips is the group experience, and for this reason we prohibit exclusive friendships of any kind. If you do decide to attend with a friend, the leaders will encourage you both to interact more with the entire group than with each other. You may start the adventure in separate tents, different kayaks, or separate cook crews. This is done with the intention of helping everyone become a group rather than form several cliques of friends. For this reason, we like to limit the number of students who know each other on any given trip.
