Dive into the rich tapestry of Spain’s language and culture. Spend your mornings in small group language immersion sessions and your afternoons and evenings practicing your new language skills. Learning extends far beyond the classroom when you explore the streets of the quaint coastal town of Tarragona, practicing with the local castellers or shopping at the open market for ingredients to cook a traditional gazpacho or tortilla espanola. Take in the beauty of southern Spain as you study and live in the vibrant city of Sevilla. Help out those less fortunate through a service project with a local NGO. Experience the thrill of learning to windsurf along the Costa Dorada. Feel the vibrant atmosphere as you walk along Barcelona’s famous Ramblas. Sample Tapas in Madrid’s historic Plaza Mayor or join a group of Catalunyans and dance the traditional sardana in a public square. Improve your language skills while discovering the amazing and diverse cultures of Spain.
“This trip is absolutely worth it. I really, really like Spain and I’ll definitely speak more Spanish now.”
— Ashley K., ARCC Student
Arrival in Barcelona
Our journey begins in cosmopolitan Barcelona, a city known for its unique combination of history and Spanish culture blended with modern and international influences. We explore the city’s elegant boulevards, impressive parks and beaches, world-renowned museums, and perhaps stop at a local restaurant to sample some delicious tapas. Wandering the streets, we see amazing buildings designed by celebrated architect Antoni Gaudí, including the famed Sagrada Familia church and the Parc Güell.
Spanish Language School in Tarragona
We transfer to Tarragona, located on the Costa Dorada just south of Barcelona, to begin our Spanish language study. The language program combines fun and learning both inside and outside the classroom, with structured daily classes, qualified teachers and activities with native speakers. The language course is designed to be varied, challenging, and fun so that we enjoy ourselves while we increase our proficiency. We also have time to relax at the beach and explore the town and its sites, including the ruins of the ancient Roman amphitheater. We enjoy a typical lunch of delicious paella at a beachfront restaurant and enjoy spending time in the evenings together as a group.
Windsurfing & Whitewater Rafting in Catalunya
We spend a day windsurfing the stunning blue waters of the Costa Dorada, where the wind and gentle waves make the perfect setting for beginners to learn this fun sport. After spending the morning with our professional instructors learning the basics, we have supervised free time to continue practicing our new skills. The adventure continues as we travel to the Pyrenees Mountains, near the border with France. Here we will spend an exciting day whitewater rafting the cascading waters of the Noguera Pallaresa River. While navigating the river, we pass by stunning natural landscapes reminiscent of Gaudí’s organic architectural style.
Homestay & Language Study in Sevilla
We continue our Spanish classes with a week of Spanish classes in Sevilla, a center of diverse culture and unique architecture. Again, our classroom instruction is supplemented by activities that take Spanish learning outside of the classroom and immerse us in the culture and way of life in Sevilla. We are welcomed by Spanish host families who will help us improve our Spanish leaps and bounds with daily conversations over meals together. Homestay are two students per home. We explore the winding streets of this small city, using our language skills to buy food at the market, converse with locals and fully immerse ourselves in the Spanish language, culture and society.
Experience Madrid and Volunteer at a Local Non-Profit Organization
Our adventure continues as we head to Madrid, the capital of Spain and a center of art and history. We have a day to explore, visiting the Prado Museum, one of the world’s most important art museums, enjoying some sunshine in El Retiro Park, and touring Madrid’s professional soccer stadium, Estadio Barnabéu. We give back to the community by volunteering at a non-profit organization before our final feast to celebrate our experience.
