A mosaic of cultures and languages add texture to our unique journey through southern Europe. Dip a paddle in the cobalt blue water that hugs the shore of an Italian isle, and straddle the border of France and Switzerland on a panoramic mountain pass. Feel the presence of long-gone gladiators in the shadow of the Coliseum, savor rich chocolates and luscious fondue, hear the clang of cow bells in the Swiss alpine air. Traverse Tuscany’s lush green hills, follow a footpath between seaside villages that allow no cars, and raft a sparkling river that tumbles from the Alps. Savor the delightful wonders of Europe on this extraordinary adventure.

Rome & Mediterranean Sea Kayaking
Our European adventure begins in the Eternal City of Rome, where the Coliseum, Michelangelo’s masterpieces, and the Pantheon are at our feet for a day. Then we travel out to a warm coastal island for two days of sea kayaking. After learning kayaking fundamentals in the Mediterranean’s turquoise waters, we tour around the island’s edge, passing lively villages and friendly fishermen. We paddle beside volcanic rock formations into isolated inlets, and tent camp at night under the stars dreaming of our island adventures.
Backpacking Tuscany
Olive trees line the boulevards of walled medieval villages, and sunlight bathes the warm coastal mountains of Tuscany, the setting for our three-day backpacking excursion. Our route takes us into the Alpi Apuane and through a region famed for its marble cliffs and deep forests of chestnut trees. We learn leadership and fundamental backcountry skills traveling as the Europeans do, staying in mountain huts, or rifugi, and feasting on savory Italian pastas and pizzas.
Cinque Terre
Drenched with stunning views of the Mediterranean, our next destination, Cinque Terre, is classic Italy. We trace a centuries old scenic footpath that connects five picturesque seaside villages built into the hillside, all part of a well-preserved national park. We spend two nights in one of the villages where life continues as it has for ages, and at day’s end we swim in the gentle Ligurian sea.
Alps Whitewater Rafting
Next, we move into the French Alps at the crossroads between Italy, France and Switzerland. After setting up camp, we spend a high-action day with professional French guides learning to whitewater raft the tumbling waters of the Isère River. As we plunge down some of France’s best whitewater, the lofty peaks of the Alps surround us.
Mont Blanc-Chamonix & Paris
Our final backpacking adventure is dominated by views of Europe’s tallest peak, Mont Blanc. We cross into three different countries and meet backpackers from all over the world. Highlights include hiking into Switzerland, where we snuggle into our chalet-style lodge and sample Swiss treats, and exploring the classic Alps town of Chamonix. Finally, we visit the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and the famed Champs D’Elysees which decorate Paris, France. During our final two days in the City of Light we cap off our European journey in style.
