The Adrienne Garrido Memorial Scholarship

By ARCC Staff

Her maturity, kindness, and approachability allowed her to connect easily with her peers and contribute meaningfully to service projects.

It takes a special sort of student to choose to spend their summer on an international adventure travel program without the comfort of a friend from home by their side. Not every teen feels ready, much less excited, to immerse themselves in a completely new culture with students from all over the country whom they’ve never met. This experience is a fundamentally risky one- leaving the comfort of home behind for the chance to explore somewhere new, give back to others, and, hopefully, make lifelong friends- but it is one Adrienne Garrido navigated seamlessly.

When ninth grader Adrienne Garrido joined her first ARCC group in Costa Rica in the summer of 2016, she was a quiet, positive presence from the start. Her maturity, kindness, and approachability allowed her to connect easily with her peers and contribute meaningfully to service projects. Adrienne’s leaders remember her smiling fearlessly and vibrantly as she ziplined through the rainforest, paving the way for more hesitant individuals to do the same.

Adrienne’s ARCC Family grew when she joined us again in Ecuador and the Galapagos in the summer of 2017, again emerging as a caring and thoughtful leader, showing determination and empathy during service projects and encouraging others to do the same. Her leaders described her as “exhibiting qualities that ARCC yearns for in all students,” and we were delighted by Adrienne’s intention to join us in Southeast Asia for a third ARCC summer.

Adrienne passed away following a fatal injury from a traffic accident in February. In response to this tragedy, heartbroken families of students who traveled with Adrienne donated funds to establish the Adrienne Garrido Scholarship fund to help a student who exemplifies the joy and exuberance Adrienne demonstrated to have the opportunity for the travel and service she so enjoyed. Adrienne’s love for adventure and service will live on in so many of the lives she touched, and through this scholarship it will be shared with a future ARCC student.

The Adrienne Garrido Scholarship Fund will cover the cost of tuition for any 2018 ARCC Summer program with availability (per applicant age-eligibility). Applicants must be currently enrolled in 7th-12th grade (as of September 2017) and exemplify kindness, selflessness, positivity, leadership, and an adventurous spirit. Furthermore, applicants must prove financial need, and submit a recommendation, along with a 750 word essay. More details and submission information can be found in the Scholarship Application Packet Here
