Johnny grew up in Winnetka, Illinois where he enjoyed competitively sailing on Lake Michigan. While attending UVM he worked as a backpacking and backcountry ski guide for the Outing Club, instructing weekend-long courses in the Green Mountains. During the summer he often guided multi-week backpacking and kayaking expeditions throughout Lake Superior’s Apostle Islands. In both his sophomore and junior years Johnny had the opportunity to study agroforestry in Nicaragua and Costa Rica —experiences that would foster his passion for travel and international service.

Directly after completing his undergrad, he was accepted into the Peace Corps and was stationed in rural Paraguay where he worked as an agricultural extensionist, attempting to improve crop production and food security at the ground level. After working for the Peace Corps, his love for South America and international service led to work in Peru for Global Leadership Abroad—a service and leadership-focused company who has goals similar to those of ARCC.
